How to Remove Adobe DRM From e. Pub and PDF e. Books. A couple of weeks ago I posted an article about how to remove DRM from Kindle ebooks in four easy steps.

This time around I’ve got a tutorial on how to easily remove Adobe DRM from e. Pub and PDF ebooks.

All you have to do is install Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, along with a free ebook management program called Calibre, and a handy plugin or two for Calibre that automatically removes DRM from ebooks upon import. It’s so easy anyone can do it.

One of the biggest problems with ebooks is DRM. It locks ebooks into certain platforms so that you can only read your purchased ebooks on specific apps and devices. As if that’s not bad enough a lot of the time ebooks that you spend good money on are horribly formatted by the author or publisher, and if the ebook has DRM there’s not much you can do about it. But if you go ahead and remove the DRM from your purchased ebooks you can read them on whichever devices or apps that you want. Plus you can easily control all aspects of layout using Calibre to modify the ebook’s CSS file. Another great thing about Calibre is you can use it to manage your entire ebook library from all ebookstores in one centralized location instead of having your ebook library fragmented across different platforms. Disclaimer: Removing DRM is a highly- controversial subject, and is in fact considered illegal in some countries, including the US and Canada.

This article is intended as only a guide for people that choose to take responsibility for removing the DRM from their purchased ebooks in order to have greater control over their own purchased content. I don’t promote or condone piracy in any shape or form. These directions are based on using a Windows 7 PC. Details may differ slightly for Mac users and for other versions of Windows. Make sure to read the Read. Me files located in the plugins folder for additional instructions.#1.

The first thing you need to do to be able to remove Adobe DRM is install Adobe Digital Editions and Calibre onto your computer if they aren’t already installed.#2. Now you need to download the DRM Removal Tools package from over on Apprentice Alf’s Blog. The link is halfway down the page. Make sure to read the note below the link about how to properly download the file. And thank Apprentice Alf and friends for making all of this so easy : ). Extract the zip file once it is downloaded. It should be called something like .

It’s a good idea to check the included Read. Me. Install the DRM- Removal plugin(s) into Calibre. Inside the DRM removal tools folder that you downloaded there’s a folder called De. DRM. All the DRM- removal plugins for Kindle, Adobe e. Pub and PDF, and B& N’s e. Pubs are incorporated into the one install zip file (this changed with a recent update; previously you had to install each separately).

To install a plugin simply launch Calibre and then select . From the Preferences window you need to select . Navigate to where you unzipped the DRM removal tools pack, open the De. DRM. A security risk dialogue pops- up where you have to click Yes to proceed.

After installing the plugin close Calibre and then restart it.#4. Now all you have to do to remove Adobe DRM from ebooks is import them into Calibre using the . The plugin will automatically strip the DRM from ebooks upon import, and it takes virtually no time at all.

Note that it won’t work for ebooks added to Calibre before installing the plugin; they will need to be deleted and re- imported. In order to import ebooks into Calibre you have to have them downloaded onto your computer first, of course.

That’s where Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) comes in. Wherever you bought your Adobe DRM ebook from (Kobo, Sony, Google, etc) there will be an option to download it to your computer if you login to your account and view your library. But when you download the ebook it will be an acsm file instead of e. Pub. First you have to open the acsm file for it to import the ebook into ADE. Once that’s done you can locate the e.

Pub file that you need to import into Calibre within the folder that ADE created on your computer. With my installation ADE ebooks are located in Documents > My Digital Editions. That’s all there is to removing Adobe DRM from ebooks!

Now you can modify the formatting of the ebook and read it on whatever app or device you choose, including a Kindle (but first you’ll have to use Calibre to convert it to MOBI format). Here’s a Getting Started with Calibre Tutorial if you want to learn how to use Calibre to convert ebooks into other formats and how to customize layout and fonts.

Sony Reader Pocket Edition (PRS- 3. Review & Rating. Good things come in small packages.

Size matters. You can't judge a book by its cover. Pick your literary clich. And the device itself will fit nicely in a purse, a jacket pocket, or even a back pocket (although that last one might be a little rough on the screen if you plan on sitting). Despite a somewhat- dated- looking menu system and the absence of wireless connectivity, the Pocket Edition is very readable digital companion. Design. The first thing you notice about the Pocket Edition is just how small it is. The smallest e- book reader we've seen, the device measures 6. HWD) and weighs just 7.

Despite its size, it's the sleek and sturdy metal construction—a hallmark of Sony's products—that gives it a rock- solid feel in your hand. Our test sample was silver, but the Pocket Edition is also available in Rose (pink), and Navy Blue.

The screen is just five inches diagonal, which, admittedly, may be a bit too small for some people. In my time testing e- book readers, I've found that it is easy enough to get accustomed to smaller displays; you just wind up turning pages more often. In fact, the massive almost- 1. Amazon Kindle DX seems unwieldy by comparison. The Pocket edition is designed to be carried everywhere you go. The 8. 00 by 6. 00- pixel screen itself is clear and sharp, unlike the washed- out display on Sony's own Touch Edition.

Even so, it should be noted that it supports just 8 shades of grey, while the Kindle supports 1. This shouldn't make much of a difference when reading text, but you might notice it when you're viewing photos. Unlike the minimalist Touch Edition, the Pocket Edition requires buttons for navigation. Not as many as the Kindle with its full QWERTY keyboard and directional toggles, but enough. Ten buttons line the side of the screen, letting you select menu options or skip around within books.

Below the screen are four more controls: Home, Back, Text Size, and four- way directional buttons used for flipping pages. Operating the Pocket Edition with one hand, right or left is very simple.

One thing you won't find on the Pocket Edition: A memory- card slot. All you get is 5. MB of internal memory. Sony claims that it's enough for about 3. If you do, you should look to a Kindle or the larger, touch- screen- based Touch Edition.

Features. Many people are surprised to find that Sony's e- book readers support such a wide variety of file- types, including DRM- free formats. DRM- protected file types include: e. Pub (Adobe DRM protected), PDF (Adobe DRM protected), BBe. B Book (PRS DRM protected). If you want DRM- free formats, you can chose among e. Tmnt 2 Battle Nexus Online. Pub, BBe. B Book, PDF, TXT, RTF, and Microsoft Word. Suffice to say, the wireless discovery and delivery on the Kindle or, the Barnes & Noble Nook is much easier.

Even so, it isn't a big deal to sideload books. The bigger problem is the relative dearth of digital content in the Sony e. Book library. In terms of books, Amazon and Sony are well- matched, but Amazon also lets you subscribe to blogs and magazines like Gearlog, App. Scout, and the PC Magazine Digital Edition. Amazon does offer magazines, newspapers, and blogs in a proprietary format, but at least you can get them. The e- ink displays on e- book readers help the devices achieve very low power requirements. The Pocket edition can run for weeks without needing a charge, but it lasts longer than, say, a Kindle, since it doesn't have to provide juice for a wireless modem.

The company estimates you can get achieve about 7,5. Just keep in mind that the Lithium ion battery isn't user- replaceable, and there's no power adapter in the box, you need to charge the device via USB. At $1. 50, the Pocket Edition is Sony's least- expensive digital reader, undercutting the Kindle and Sony's own Touch Edition. It doesn't feature bells and whistles like memory slots and wireless book downloads, but as a simple, straightforward book reader it's a pleasure to use. I would still recommend the Kindle for most avid readers, but the Pocket Edition offers a truly pocketable form factor that may just catch on.
